The Significance

A promise, they say, is never to be broken and that it takes more courage to keep than break. In the 16th century, promise rings were given as a sign of betrothal, when a couple was ready to declare their love and union to the world.

It was a step taken before the engagement and nuptials. Today, these rings are given as a sign of commitment to each other. However, these are worn not just by couples; these can be worn by friends, lovers, or even yourself, as a memento of a commitment.

Types

Pre-engagement Ring : This is the most popular type. When a couple is serious about their commitment to each other but at the same time not ready to get engaged, they exchange rings. These can be made in gold or white gold with diamonds. It is common to have them engraved as well.

Chastity Rings : They are a sort of commitment to remain chaste or pure until after the wedding. They are also gaining popularity in the West where parents are giving them to their teenagers. They can also be exchanged by couples who want to practice abstinence till their wedding night.

Friendship Rings : Though not many friends exchange rings, they are simple bands of friendship that essentially say 'a friend in need is a friend indeed'.

Monogamy : They signify fidelity and monogamy.

Substance Abstinence Rings : If you want a loved one to abstain from any substance like alcohol or cigarettes, then this ring can be given. Ideally, it would be set with an amethyst, as the Greeks believe it as an antidote for drunkenness.

The most common are rings made of white gold and diamonds.

There are other styles as well, those set with sterling silver or yellow gold with precious and semiprecious stones like topaz, aquamarines, or sapphires. White gold and diamond rings look more classy, that's not to say that others don't. However, if you have the money, why not spend it on something more eternal like a diamond.
